National Medical Laboratory Week | Putting the spotlight on workers who are essential to our health
April 14, 2025

Longueuil - From April 13 to 19, the APTS will be celebrating National Medical Laboratory Week honouring the care, accuracy and passion of professionals, technologists and technicians who work in medical laboratories. These are people employed by Québec’s public health care system and at the Institut national de santé publique and Héma-Québec.
The APTS represents over 5,000 people working in labs throughout Québec. These employees, of whom over 80% are women, play a key role in the diagnosis and follow-up provided to patients. Their expert knowledge deserves to be recognized, celebrated – and better known.
“Behind every lab result is a well-trained, highly qualified person whose work is a crucial element of our health care system,” said APTS president Robert Comeau. “Medical Laboratory Week is a great opportunity to highlight that person’s contribution and to make Quebecers more aware of what people in these jobs do.”
Employees who have a diploma in biomedical laboratory technology carry out a wide range of precise technical tasks that make it possible to diagnose diseases and give patients appropriate follow-up and treatment. Their rock-solid expertise comes into play as they take samples, prepare them for testing, and analyze them so that physicians can make accurate diagnoses and carry out surgical procedures without jeopardizing patients’ health.
There is real beauty in these occupations, even in the face of a severe labour shortage and challenging conditions. The APTS is proud to pay tribute to the dedication of workers who are always there to deliver medical lab analyses in every part of Québec.
To make their voices heard, the APTS has made a video (in French) focusing on lab personnel, in which they share their pride in doing deeply meaningful work. We discover what motivates them, how much they care about doing a good job, and how eager they are to share that passion with the next generation.
“I’m proud of being a medical technologist. I’ve been passionate about this job for over twenty years,” said APTS vice-president Sandra Etienne. “When you work in a lab, you’re making a real contribution to people’s health, even though you don’t always see them. If you’re looking for purpose in your work, I urge you to take a look at these incredible professions.”
The goal of the video is also to inspire the next generation to explore a field that’s exciting, crucially important, and constantly changing. It is available on the APTS website and social media.
