Budget cuts announced | The APTS denounces the return of austerity in health and social services
November 18, 2024
Longueuil – Announcements of upcoming budget cuts, a moratorium on new positions and the cancellation of planned job postings: the axe is falling on institutions in Québec’s health and social services system.
The APTS (Alliance du personnel professionnel et technique de la santé et des services sociaux) strongly denounces budget cutbacks announced in the last few days, demonstrating beyond a doubt that austerity is indeed back in the public system. This will have serious consequences on services offered to the public, contrary to what Santé Québec president and CEO Geneviève Biron said last week.
“This isn’t the first time we’ve seen this,” said APTS president Robert Comeau. “Cutting funding to the system while pretending it won’t impact services is nothing new, quite the contrary. Santé Québec is basically telling employees that the hoped-for reinforcements aren’t coming, and that they will have to keep doing ever more with ever less. Given the current state of the public system, this adds insult to injury. We need to stop asking the impossible from employees who are already close to the edge. Our people are worried about the future of public services, period.”
The APTS intends to mobilize against this wave of budget cuts and any government order designed to undermine the services offered to Quebecers. The union will continue to fight for major reinvestments that will recognize the value of jobs in the public system, leading to more compassionate, more accessible and better quality care and services.
