Creation of the job title of psychotherapist | An APTS victory for access to mental health services
September 24, 2025

Longueuil – The APTS (Alliance du personnel professionnel et technique de la santé et des services sociaux) is thrilled with the culmination of a major effort: the official recognition of the job title of psychotherapist in the health and social services system. This union victory is an important step forward in improving access to mental health services.
Thanks to sustained advocacy by the APTS, including presenting the health and social services ministry (MSSS) with requests to create job titles, guidance counsellors, criminologists, occupational therapists, psychoeducators and social workers will soon be able to practice as psychotherapists within a recognized framework.
In addition to this advancement for mental health services, the APTS obtained the creation of the job title of child life specialist to better recognize the specialized services available to children receiving care in the health and social services system.
“These wins are the result of diligent work by our members and our pay equity and job evaluation teams,” said APTS president Robert Comeau. “They will ensure the expertise of our professionals is better recognized and reduce waiting lists for mental health services, as well as provide better care for children in public institutions.”
These victories are part of a broader effort by the APTS to ensure full recognition of its members’ expertise and their essential role in improving the care and services provided to Quebecers.
